Leírás és Paraméterek
On 30 December 1916, the Holy Crown of Hungary was placed on the head of Charles IV of Habsburg in Matthias church, in Buda's castle district. At the time, no one in the throng of guests would have believed it was the last royal coronation of a Hungarian king or that several decades later the monarchy as an institution would cease to exist in Hungary. This momentous event prompted Ödön Gohl (1859–1927), a scholar of numismatics in the Department of Coins and Antiquities of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, to collect and publish Hungarian numismatic material associated with the several-hundred-year history of Hungarian royal coronations. In the summer of 2012, the ‘Lendület’ (‘Momentum’) Holy Crown of Hungary Research Group was formed within the Institute of History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Research Centre for the Humanities. One of its primary goals in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the last Hungarian royal coronation was to publish Hungary’s coronation medals and jetons, which had played a significant role in royal representation, thus continuing the foundation work done by the great forefather in numismatics. This present volume, a detailed catalogue of these objects, minted for the coronations of twenty-four Hungarian kings, queens and queen consorts from 1508 to 1916, represents nearly half a decade of intensive museum and archival research and includes a wealth of historical background information. With nearly one thousand colour illustrations, it provides readers and collectors with an unparalleled glimpse into the history of royal coronations in modern Hungary and an opportunity to explore an exceptional treasury of numismatic objects. Published jointly with the Hungarian National Museum, this volume is now available in English as well as Hungarian (2016).
